About Rostum K. Nanavatty |
Lieutenant General Rostum K Nanavatty was commissioned into the 2nd Battalion of the 8th Gorkha Rifles on 11 December 1962. He retired from the Army on 31 May 2003 as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Northern Command. He has had wide experience of command in low intensity operations, first as a regimental officer in the Northeast, and thereafter as a formation commander in various theatres. He has been Commander Parachute Commando Task Force, in Sri Lanka (1987-88); Commander 102 Infantry Brigade, in the Siachen Glacier Sector (1988-90); General Officer Commanding 19 Infantry Division, in the Baramulla Sector, in Jammu and Kashmir (1993-94); General Officer Commanding 3 Corps, responsible for counter-insurgency operations in the states of Nagaland, Manipur and Tripura, and in the region of South Assam (1997-2000); and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Northern Command, in Jammu and Kashmir (2001-03). He is a recipient of the Param Vishisht Seva, Uttam Yudh Seva, and Ati Vishisht Seva Medals for distinguished service in war and peace.
